organizing the Vuku Gala Dinner

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Romans 12:9‭-‬19

When I read the passage, it reminded me of the Beatitudes from Matthew 5, as well as 'Meeting 8 - Blessed are those…' in the Vuku Family Workbook.

Paul discusses how we should live our lives as a living sacrifice, taking actions in love. However, it almost sounds like a proverb or the disciplined actions of a holy man - 'Do this and do that' with seemingly impossible standards. What matters more is not what to do, but how to do it, right? Often, we know what to do, but we don't know how to do it amidst all the hardships and difficulties we face, especially when it comes to sharing love.

I believe the 'How' is also offered here, that is, 'leaving room for God's wrath.' It's not about rejoicing in the inevitable, oncoming revenge of God's might on our enemies while maintaining our composure. Rather, it's about knowing I am secure in Him, and that God's will be done not by carrying out what is right with my own hands, but by keeping His love in me.

Through the harsh waters, Jesus is the one who keeps me calm and strong. He keeps me undeterred and shaped not according to the world, but according to who I am in Him. When His spirit is within me, I am truly blessed.

Blessed are those who walk with Christ.
