‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:16‭-‬18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

[16] This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. [17] If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? [18] Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Love is a very interesting topic. Here, John is describing what love is. More accurately, he describes how love appears in a person. It ranges from sharing our mere possessions to laying down our lives. The former action is very basic, and the latter is the ultimate expression of love.

The two important questions are: what lies in between, and what love enables us to do any of those.

Obviously, love matures and grows. We could start by sharing our possessions but mature into laying down our lives. Even if we don't grow to that extent, what is the key factor of the love we need to possess to enable any of those actions?

It is the understanding of Jesus' heart, more specifically, His love - why He loves and what He loves for.

When we fully understand that, we will be able to show a kind of love that convicts those who desire Christ. Whatever the actions might be, they will be in truth and not in vain.

Search for His heart, not for your own sake, but for theirs.
